This is the trait of all traits, It's the trait that you definitely want to have if you cut hair for a living. When I was out in the South of France last month, learning from the world's number one hairdresser for precision cutting, it became so evident to me that there is one trait that rules them all if you want to go far in any realm of life. When I watch someone like JB Mazella cut hair, it's evident that his level of skill only comes with relentless effort. It was clear to see that even at 45 years of age and 29 years in cutting hair, JB still loves his work. He would finish showing me some nifty tricks that I've never seen before, he would burst out into a ball of joy, sometimes mini-hopping on the spot out of excitement (like a 6-year-old getting their first puppy) over something that he's done almost all his life. This was inspiring to me, to know that joy can still be found in our craft, many years later, and at the highest level in the game. The thing is though, it was also obvious to me that JB, even at his level, still believes he has so much left to learn. Which brings me back to the one trait that all Barbers and Hairdressers need if they wish to go far... The trait? Patience. JB Mazella (easily the top hairdresser for precision cutting) is STILL on his own journey to "mastery" JB understands that anything worth having takes time, sometimes, a lifetime. The lesson here is that while most hair professionals think that they know it all after 5 years, they actually know fvckall. the minute you think: "there isn't much more to learn" You're dead wrong, and that's the exact moment you should invest in education. What I learned from my 4 days with JB blew me away. I learned things you simply cannot find online. Tips that have taken JB 29 years to discover.
